about

Here are the first five songs that I wrote in 1971 when I was eighteen, the year I dropped out of university. It was a time before the internet and mobile phones, it would be eight years until the Sony Walkman came out. It was a time of double-fold vinyl albums, books and corduroy, tea and cigarettes. A time before duvets, when you had to book an international phone-call in advance, a pint of beer cost 20p and it did seem as if life was a gift to squander. The title ‘Five Songs Left’ is a reference to the 1969 album, ‘Five Leaves Left’ by Nick Drake, which refers to the little slip of paper that would come out of a Rizla packet when you’d nearly reached the end. We tried to make these recordings sound authentically of the time they were written.
